Production

We challenged the production of the film because of the quantity of people that worked on the production in total. Because it was just me and Tom creating, filming and editing the opening sequence, we challenged a usual coming of age films production. This because professional films would have a much bigger team working on different aspects of the production. However, I believe that we coped well with the amount of work and worked effectively together to complete our opening.

Location

We challenged the stereotypical location for a coming of age film in our opening. We chose a forest, which would usually be more suited to a horror or thriller genre because this is the effect we wanted and how we wanted it to look. This is different to examples like Ferris Buellers Day Off and The Breakfast Club where their opening sequences are set in a bedroom and a school. Our location, however, is extremely isolated, lonely and a binary opposite to the well known stereotype. Even though our location doesn't portray the coming of age genre, I believe other elements in our sequence do.

Narrative

Quality

The narrative of a conventional coming of age film was challenged in our opening. This was mainly due to the lack of dialogue which could have made it difficult for the audience to identify the genre. The story line of our film is a lot more action packed than the conventional story line. This is because the protagonist usually tries to overcome a small problem and that is their aim during the film, like in Ferris Buellers Day Off. However, we wanted to increase the tension and excitement by giving the protagonist a big problem to overcome, an illness. This may encourage more people to watch the film because they would expect more things to go wrong hense building more tension. We also chose the unconventional location with the aim of achieving more viewing figures.

The overall quality of our production was unsuprisingly challenged due to many factors. One main factors was the camera equipment that we used. This was because because the best camera we could source was a Cannon 700D which even though was a good quality camera, still didn't produce the best shots. This differs to a professional coming of age production as they would have used one of the best professional camera. However, the use of a less expensive camera was not only cost effective but gave realistic quality for a small, low budget production.
