Font

We developed the fonts that we used throughout our opening on various occasions with the help of ‘Dafont’. The main title that we used for Recovery was from Dafont with the specific typography design downloaded and put through onto iMovie. For the rest of the credits we used the same font to simplify the opening. We downloaded a typewriter font and developed this into our opening with inspiration from the film The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. This film frequently uses this font as it clearly conveys the coming of age genre. Therefore, we decided to included this style of font in our sequence in order to portray the coming of age genre more because the other elements in the opening didn't display this genre as much as we would have liked.

Sound

The main soundtrack that we used was very unconventional to the coming of age genre because it sounded eerie, spooky and linked more with the horror genre. However, we wanted to achieve this in order to build up tension and engage the audience, which I believe we successfully did. We also developed the soundtrack even further by adding more horror related sound effects. We included sounds like a heartbeat and whispering to further enhance the tension. We watched some thriller and horror opening sequences from previous AS exams to choose the right sounds so that our opening didn't become cheesy.

Shot Types

We developed a lot of conventional shot types during our opening sequence, we mainly used familiar shot types such as close ups and pans but we developed them by extending them with extra footage so that they lasted longer to add effect. When researching coming of age openings, we found that they featured a lot of long shots to set the scene and also facial shots to introduce them and give us a clear image of their looks. Therefore we thought that it would be a good idea to use lots of close ups of our main characters face to experience what he is going through and develop an idea of their persona or reactions to certain situations. Other than these conventional shots we developed and changed some original shots to make the opening more interesting. For example, over the shoulder shots, point of view and blurred shots helped to to demonstrate what the protagonist is going through.

Action Codes

Throughout our opening we made sure that we developed some action codes. We did this by using some realistic clothing of a hospital gown. This presented our first action code because the audience would want to continue watching to discover why he is wearing what he is wearing. We also used sound effectively at the end of our opening to provoke another enigma code. After a long close up of the protagonist the there is a sharp transition to a black screen and the music intensifies and stops to bring the opening to an end. The tense build up could suggest that something has gone wrong which can cause the audience to watch on.
