Setting the Scene
Film Institution
Another convention we used and followed from the film Breakfast Club was the establishment of the scene and location. This can be seen in the opening of Breakfast Club when there are a cluster of shot that display common items or places in a school. We decided to take this convention on and include some shots of the forest that we were filming at to not only make it easy for the audience but also to start the film at a slow pace, allowing us to increase the speed for the main part of our opening sequence. We managed to include 5 scenery shots which also gave us time to put some credits of each of them.
A small distribution and institution company would have produced our film because it would have been produced on a low budget and not have many characters. Therefore, we decided to use Film4 Productions and Studiocanal because we thought that they would produce the kind of film that we wanted. This was one of the biggest decisions in the production of our opening sequence because if we chose a large production company like Universal Studios, people may be lead to thinking that this is a big production. whereas a small institution will lower peoples expectations and allow them to prepare themselves for what they are about to watch.
We used the same credit order as most of the modern films, in particular Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which is a coming of age film. This is because we didn't want to confuse the audience by placing the title at the end as it could signify a trailer. We also made sure that each credit appeared on shots longer than 3 seconds to allow the audience to read and deduce each credit. The order is as follows: Institutional information, A (directors name) Film, Actor's names, Film title, Music by, Costume design by, Edited by, Directed by, Executive producer.
